avoidr

avoidr is a collaboration between composer, producer, and keyboardist Alexander de Gogorza Moravcsik and DJ, producer, and software/electrical engineer Rob Whitaker. Influenced by the greats of live hardware dance music—Honeysmack, KiNK, Floating Points, and Jeff Mills, among many others—they have spent years fine-tuning their rig and developing a distinctive sound, fusing the twinkling, organic textures of shoegaze, melodic house, and dub with the unapologetic, ecstatic drive of hardgroove and acid techno.

all performances are fully improvised — Shazam has no power here.

about

Alexander de Gogorza Moravcsik

Alexander de Gogorza Moravcsik is a San Francisco-based multidisciplinary artist. He is currently the artist-in-residence at the Hundredth Hill in Bloomington, Indiana.

He received his BA in Music summa cum laude from Princeton University, where he studied jazz piano and electronic music composition—as well as clawhammer banjo—under Dan Trueman, Dmitri Tymoczko, Tyondai Braxton, Jeff Snyder, Angelica Sanchez, and Cleek Schrey. He also holds a degree in Piano Performance from The American School of Modern Music in Paris, France, where he studied under Cédric Hanriot and Malik Mezzadri. He has performed on numerous jazz, funk, folk, and progressive rock albums as a sideman and session player.

In collaboration with DJ, producer, and software/electrical engineer Rob Whitaker, Moravcsik has spent the last three years developing avoidr, a vehicle for the duo’s deep fascination with live hardware electronic music, aspiring to thoughtfully integrate the sensibilities of post-minimalist composition and modern jazz with the heady euphoria of the dancefloor through ephemeral, fully improvised live sets.

In 2018, he won the Paris Prix de la Photographie for his jazz portraiture. That same year, he worked as an assistant in the studio of master photographer Abelardo Morell. After almost a decade away from fine arts work—picking up the camera only as a hired gun and intermittently studying in the darkroom under Deanna Lawson and Jeffrey Whetstone—Moravcsik has returned to the practice following a stay on the remote Inian Islands of Southeast Alaska, where he sought to capture the fragile and imposing beauty of the old-growth coastal rainforest.

In his spare time, he enjoys car camping in Cassie—his well-loved 2009 Subaru Impreza—organizing music festivals for his friends, and cooking.
